What Science Actually Says About Vipassana Meditation
People have practiced Vipassana meditation for over 2,500 years. Scientists have only studied it closely for about 20 years. So what happens when you point real research tools at an ancient practice? The honest answer is: some good news, some mixed results, and a lot we still don’t know.
This article looks at real, named studies. Not vague claims. Not “science proves” headlines. Just what researchers actually found, and how confident we can be about it.
What Vipassana Studies Found on Stress and Anxiety
In 2015, psychologists Roberta Szekeres and Eleanor Wertheim published a study in the journal Stress and Health. They tracked 122 people who took a 10-day Vipassana course, and compared them to 50 people who had signed up but not yet attended.
The people who completed the course reported less stress and more well-being right after the course, and those improvements were largely still holding up when the researchers checked back in six months later. The researchers linked the improvement to increases in mindfulness, meaning the ability to notice the present moment without judging it.
A larger 2025 systematic review in the journal Cureus looked at 11 different studies on Vipassana, including three randomized controlled trials. The reviewers, led by Dr. Selvaraj Giridharan, concluded there is “moderate evidence” that Vipassana helps with stress, anxiety, and even migraine symptoms in some people. Moderate evidence is a specific term. It means the results point in a helpful direction, but the studies are still too few and too small to call it proven.
What Brain Studies Found
In 2019, a team led by researcher Catherine Andreu published a study in the journal Scientific Reports. They tested experienced Vipassana meditators on a task that measures self-control, called a Go/Nogo test. It requires you to press a button fast, except when a certain signal appears, then you must stop yourself.
The meditators made fewer mistakes than non-meditators on this test. Brain scans (EEG) showed a specific change too: lower activity in a brain signal called midfrontal theta, in the front-center part of the brain, which is linked to effortful self-control. The researchers suggested that experienced meditators may need to work less hard to control their impulses, because the skill has become more automatic.
This is a real, published finding. But it’s worth being careful here. The study compared experienced meditators to non-meditators, it did not follow the same people before and after years of practice. People who stick with meditation for years might already have been better at self-control before they started. That’s a common problem in this kind of research, called self-selection.
Where the Results Are Genuinely Mixed
Honesty matters more here than anywhere else. Not every study found a benefit. A 2012 study by researcher Anup Adhikari found that a Vipassana course reduced depression but did not significantly change people’s anxiety scores. A 2013 study by researcher Jonathan Krygier found real improvements in people’s sense of well-being, but no significant change in heart rate variability, a measure of how the body’s nervous system responds to stress. Other studies found real improvements. Science doesn’t always agree with itself on the first pass, and that’s normal, not a scandal.
Don’t Mix Up Vipassana With General Mindfulness Research
Here’s a mistake worth avoiding. Many headlines about “meditation and the brain” are actually about MBSR, short for Mindfulness-Based Stress Reduction. MBSR is a popular 8-week program built in the 1970s by Jon Kabat-Zinn. It borrows ideas from Vipassana and other traditions, but it is its own separate program, usually shorter and less intense than a 10-day Vipassana course.
Big, well-known brain studies on meditators sometimes combine many different practices and traditions in one analysis. That’s useful for spotting broad patterns, but it isn’t the same as proof about Vipassana specifically. When you read “meditation changes your brain,” always ask which meditation, and for how long.
The Honest Summary
What’s reasonably well-supported: short-term reductions in stress and anxiety after a Vipassana course, at least for people who choose to take one. What’s promising but early: brain and self-control changes in long-term practitioners. What’s still uncertain: how long benefits last, how much depends on people who were already motivated to change, and how Vipassana compares directly to other meditation styles.
Lab studies are one kind of evidence. A very different, much messier kind of evidence comes from watching what happens when thousands of real people, under real pressure, try Vipassana outside a lab entirely. That’s exactly what happened at Tihar Jail in Delhi, one of the most famous real-world tests of this technique anywhere in the world.
